My Story, Your Story: Sunday, January 25th, 1.00 - 3.00 pm
Vancouver Island Regional Library, Nanaimo Harbourfront Branch, 90 Commercial Street

Free Event! Everyone Welcome! Prizes! Refreshments!
The event will feature amazing activities for all ages: a literacy magician, a face painter, a First Nations storyteller, a puppet show for preschoolers, a sample Parent Child Mother Goose session for infants, book making for young children and drop-in computer tutoring for adults. The very popular library Lit Kits, funded by the Greater Nanaimo Early Years Partnership, will be on display and 4 new Lit Kit themes will be launched. In addition, the library is launching several, brand new, early literacy computer stations with literacy-based games for young children just learning to read.

My Story, Your Story is planned to coincide with National Family Literacy Day on January 27. It celebrates talking, story telling, reading and learning as family and intergenerational activities to build literacy at any age. It is an opportunity for our community to celebrate how we are working together to support literacy across the lifespan.

The literacy skills that enrich our life as adults do not start to develop when a child enters school, nor is literacy confined to a love of books. Oral language and storytelling are foundational components in developing literacy and will be well represented at this family event and in the library's Literacy Kits. Singing, rhyming, playing with sounds, and becoming familiar with stories are all activities that help to prepare a child for learning well before kindergarten.

Please bring the whole family and join us for this wonderful afternoon.
Puppet Show: The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch: 1:15-2:15
Donald Dunphries: Literacy Magician 1:15-2:15
Parent Child Mother Goose: 2:30-3:30
